Will Veteran's Benefits Help Pay for Assisted Living and Nursing Home Costs?

Transcript

Speaker 1:When someone's going into assisted living, we usually apply for what's called VA Aid and Attendance. And the reason we do that is because it's very difficult to get Medicaid for assisted living facilities. There is a wait list and you have to come off the wait list before you can even apply for it. If you use VA Aid and Attendance when you're in a nursing home, your benefits are going to be reduced to $90 because you're on Medicaid. So we generally use it for assisted living facilities. And it's a tax free pension and it's based upon your income versus your unreimbursed medical expenses, and the entire cost of your stay in the assisted living facility is considered unreimbursed medical expense. So generally it zeroes out your income and you're getting the full benefit.
